54. Consciousness = Self Reflexion?

We discuss about what consciousness actually is. Is it mere self reflexion?

Discussion about this podcast

Thanks for sharing this topic Josua. Near the end of the podcast I had the following ‘thought’ that I would like to share/pose … do you think God could provide/deposit a ‘snippet’ of input-data to an AI engine (or the like), that essentially would then allow/provide a response/output that could then be considered like a human response; or more likely, do you think God has/would decide to limit such activity to ‘beings’ that originated via creation, say, with a soul (e.g. humans)? Maybe this is essential to consciousness? Just a thought…

I think He has to limit himself to beings with a soul, since only they can give a respnse that could be considered a human response.

God inputing something into an AI reminds me of scripture, where it says that God breathed life into Adam. So by making that input he would basically do the same.

Now that I think of it, biblically speaking, this seems to be the difference between humans and other forms, including man-made ones: God breathed life into man.

Since the hebrew word for breath is the same as the word for spirit, this means that God gave man a spirit, with which he can communicate with God.

Also I think this spirit is where our free will comes from. Considering your thought experiment, the difference for a God with prompting man or prompting an AI would be that, since he would know the result of both only for the AI it would be a deterministic one.

This becomes clearer when thinking of Laplace's demon instead: This 'demon' is to be able to compute the result of everything if he know the initial conditions (in this case the prompt). For an AI he then could predict beforehand, what the AI will respond, since it is still a deterministic process. Assuming man has free will, that would not be possible for Laplace's demon when prompting men. I think herein lies the difference between man and machine.

Brilliant response! Thanks Josua

Are science and faith even compatible? Don't they contradict one another?

"According to Sci-Faith" is the official english podcast of Sci-Faith. Regularly new episodes on the topic of science and faith are published here.
Sci-Faith expresses the conviction that science and faith can be combined without any problems.
My vision is to show, that if science is built upon faith it can be more fruitful, than if it denies faith.
